About Emma

Emma Mildred Cowell is a soprano, music historian, conductor and keyboardist. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Voice Performance from Geneva College, where she also studied piano and organ. Emma went on to earn her Master of Music degree in music history and literature from Youngstown State University, where her research focused on English sacred music and metaphysical poetry. Emma serves as the Minister of Music at Ascension Episcopal Parish, where she also directs the Salon Series, Ascension’s guest artist concert series. Together with pianist Hannah Brewer, Emma is the Co-Artistic Director of the Portland-based chamber music collaboration Ensemble Boulanger. Emma is a Company Member of Light Opera of Portland, and recently appeared with them as Ruth in Ruddigore and the First Bridesmaid in Trial by Jury. Her other recent solo appearances include keyboard recitals, art song recitals, and soprano solos in Sullivan’s Festival Te Deum, Charpentier’s Reniement de Saint Pierre and the “Gloria” from Lotti’s Missa Sapientiae. Emma is a member of the liturgical choir Cantores in Ecclesia which whom she sings services and concerts throughout the year, and participates annually in their internationally-acclaimed William Byrd Festival. Emma also directs the Hausgesang Choir, a house choir that meets in homes in Northwest Portland to learn choral repertoire from across history in a social setting. Emma recently completed a three-year contract as Music Researcher and Archivist for All Classical Portland KQAC 89.9, Portland’s classical music station. She lives in Portland with a pair of spunky house rabbits.
